BREAKING NEWS

July 2006

Thursday afternoon the show went much smoother. We had a great studio audience who fed into the hype of our being in Philly. Also it didn’t hurt that our surprise guest that afternoon was Butta, who was in town filming a commercial.

I was more excited, though, that I’d be able to stay at Julius’s apartment in the city, which I planned to move into over the weekend. That way I could quit all the back and forth driving in the bumper-to-bumper traffic from the suburbs to the city. I hadn’t yet figured out how to drop that bomb on my parents, but I’d get it done and soon.

I phoned Maurice on my way home to remind him of dinner. He tried to weasel out of it, until I assured him that there would be women; however I didn’t bother to tell him that it was only two and that I didn’t think either one of them were his type. The other bug I planned to put in his ear was that I needed a car to drive while I was in town. My brother owned two Mercedes-Benz dealerships, one in Lower Merion and the other in Voorhees, New Jersey, and if I was going to be staying in town, then my brother needed to make sure I was driving the hottest thing popping on the lot.

Back at my parents’ that afternoon I changed into shorts and a tank and assisted my mother in putting the final touches on the formal dining room for the dinner. She was so particular about where every little thing was placed. I’m sure more than anything else she annoyed the hell out of her house staff by getting in their way. But they’d all been with her long enough to know all her little nuances. It was my belief that if my mother had had to work, she could’ve easily been in the party planning business.

“How was your day, honey?” she asked as she followed the florist into the dining room with a handful of fresh lilacs.

“Not bad at all. We’re gonna focus on some Philly stuff, so it’s going to be pretty busy over the next few weeks.”

My mother didn’t answer right away. She was switching the linen napkins from a striking blue to a bright yellow to match the new dinnerware. She’d wanted the table setting less formal.

“Are you going to have time to see some of your old friends?” she asked. “There are also some engagements I’ve been invited to that I’d like you to attend with me.”

“I don’t know, Mom. If I have the time I will,” I answered as she handed me the napkins to fold.

She stopped what she was doing for a minute and put her hands over mine. “Linney, listen to me. I understand how important your job is, and you’ve been blessed with success at a young age, but you must remember, honey, with all that working, you still have to make time for your family.
